Howzit Ma! How're you man? I'm fine. Listen, I just wanted to tell you about what a jol I am having here in Dubai. The other night I watched these okes play squash down by the gym. Jeeez like! The first two okes were impressive Bru! But I reckon they were showing off for the cherries in the gym. Ouma (the oke's actual name) must have got his missus to pack his kit. Even his shoes matched. He reminded me of those blerrie bees that used to steek us stukkend on tant Sanna's stoep! Anyway, the other oke looked like a front row Springbok. Even the nurse was worried she might have to miss her tv soapies just in case his heart attacked him. I can't believe he lasted 5 games. Must be the padkos he's got under his shirt. Ouma bee klapped him 3-2. Usually I don't smaak Auzzies but this one was alright only because his team got bliksemmed by the Blue Bulls at Loftus on Saturday. The game was not so lekker because the other oke played like a moffie and got klapped sommer 6 love. Maybe he needs other shoes. I reckon Pieman's Ma and Pa were still vrot the morning they got him back from the hospital. He sings like that day we helped oom Sarel drag his ox with a chain block and a bakkie to the slaghuis. I can't remember the other oke's name. Sounds like prophet or sheikh. Never mind, I needed a siggi and charfed one from a cherrie in the gym. Mooi man! Elton klapped the other oke 3-0. The last 2 okes were both ballies. The squash ref was chekking out the chicks so bad he forgot how to count. I think he wishes his heart attacked him so the nurse would have to give him... what's it... cpr? The oke with the beard also played like a moffie but at least he got one game. I think the ref was a doos. The other ballie klapped him 3-1. Jaa, no look Bru. It could have gone either way. After, the okes all invited me for a dop. But I tuned them; "Nought China! I don't drink with blerrie moffies." (English Translation of the above: Huh? (Flyers match report for 5/5/08 courtesy of Deb "D23B") Flyers Maintain Altitude The intrepid Flyers ventured into Bur Dubai this week for a clash with the Indian Sports Club. Old foes, the ISC, were sitting just below the Flyers in 4th spot in the league prior to the contest. The Flyers squad rotation system threw together one of the strongest teams in a few weeks (on paper anyway!!). Pieman was first up. The first game was a pleasure to watch with some excellent squash from both players. The Pieman just edged it. This loss destroyed Ram and Pieman easily went on to record a love victory. Fist blood to the Flyers. Next up stepped the veteran Pops. His opponent, John Eapen, was less than half his age. You could hear the groan of Pops joints as he was moved around the court by the in form Eapen. Pops succumbed to a love defeat not without a big fight. Don t call us!! GC and Capn U played simultaneously. GC recorded a very convincing 3 0 victory, outclassing his opponent on the night. Capn U, nursing a dodgy left nether region, recorded a 3 1 victory despite some very strange let/stroke calls from Pops. Capn U was quoted after the match saying The Flyers are back, we are now firmly entrenched in the top half of the league after an indifferent start to the season. I have some concern over the form of the veteran Pops, he may need oiling and a visit to the recently inaugurated Moorefield s Eye Hospital Dubai at Dubai Healthcare City!! As always the post match meal and company was superb. GC and Capn U kept up the LATB at the Somerset Arms!! (Flyers match report for 29/4/08 courtesy of the indomitable Captain Underpants) The Flyers soar again! The glint was unmistakable. And it wasn't from the canine of the ever present Dr. Evil. Oh no! This was the glint of a precision instrument crafted from surgical stainless steel... It was clinical. Much like one of those uncomfortable procedures, the mere thought of which grips all men in a clammy grasp of cold sweat. Such was the demise of the Sharjah Wanderers! It all began with a sense of foreboding... Edouardo suggesting that there was something wrong with the ball. That was attended to lickity snip! Druncan 3, Edouardo zip! Having set the precedent any thought of mercy from the hand of Pieman was naive. Raj was deftly tied up in knots. Pieman 3, Raj 0. Debs/D23DB (or whatever he is nowadays) sorted out the loose ends... D23DB 3, Pieter 0 but it was the masterly performance of "Pops" that sealed the deal. After a wobbly start at two games down the veteran rendered his opponent "prostrate" with an impressive performance. Pops 3, Phil 2. All was forgiven and bruised egos restored at a very enjoyable post match fizzy hops juice! (Meanwhile, throughout the above drama, Dr. Evil and Dr. Captain Underpants were busy (at a very close venue) diagnosing the Chairman's pulled muscle, and analysing whether "Really Cold" actually means 'REALLY COLD'. This of course, took a lot of time, so they missed much (all) of the match action, but apparently supported the Flyers as a VLATB club.) He is also coach of UAE's top men's (Khawaja Adil Maqbool) and women's players (Trishya Reddy), "I am very pleased that we have received such a positive response from the junior players in the UAE. Unable to automobile home, and since his flying powers had deserted him, he bravely decided to walk (in a fashion). A kindly trucker, spotting Captn. U offered a lift. Since U's flight powers were still lacking he had to climb the heights into the cabin. Upon release at his destination he courteously thanked the good driver and stepped out of the cabin quite forgetting that his flight powers were gone for the night... THUMP. Not 1, but 2 Match reports - for the same Match!
Next up was veteran Keith against "Pieman" Elton. More long rallies ensued with Keith trying to psych out the Pieman by going for jogs inbetween games. This seemed to put Elton off slightly and a number of errors were made by the Flyers No. 1, but eventually he digged deep into his pie reserves and dug out a hard fought 3-2 victory.
The Dark SideIt all began with a trip to visit the Dark Side!! An intrepid Flyers expeditionary force assembled on the fringes of the civilized Galactic Empire to stock up on supplies and to plan their mission. Alas, an instant setback was delivered in the form of an announcement that "Princess" Deb had been captured by men in uniform and being held quite close to a Black Hole. Undeterred by Debs' plight (well Nokia's were used, jokes were made but still the men did not release him in time to join the mission) the merry band continued on their way. Since light sabres were missing (as Dr. Evil's MiniMe units had stolen them) Pool cues had to do and battle was joined. As the battle raged, the Dark forces gathered and began to play tricks on the Flyers' minds. They slowly lost the ability to reason and communications were drowned out by the din. They were assaulted by a band of midgets with pointy parts all of whom were clearly from the Dark Side. The heat of the battle, the loud noises and flashing lights made it extremely difficult to judge who was being overcome or not. It is believed all made it though and returned safe to the civilized Galaxy. Only slowly are all the parts of the story coming to light. Stay tuned. So, what of Deb, you may ask? Well, it seems the name has had to be changed due to the nature of the event that had befallen him, so it was decided on that very night that henceforth he would be "D2G". (This is quite apart from the logical fact that he could not remain a Debutante [in the classical sense] forever). This intrepid reporter, in fact, has paid a large sum of money to get a recent photo of him:
The Glove Remains Undefeated!
Adil Makes it to Final Qualifying of Canadian Classic GC goes missing at Squash Dinner, LATB club shattered!Flyers Crash Land in Al AinThe Flyers split into two squadrons (Mirdif and Jumeirah) and traveled to Al Ain to play the rearranged game. All was well with the squadrons arriving at the target on time. This was amazing considering the J squadron consisted of the rugged old warhorse Pops Steibelt not well known for his time keeping. Capn U was first up to take on the might of top of the table Al Ain. Maybe it was the journey, maybe it was the shock of seeing Pops, maybe he wasnít good enough, whatever happened he was roundly stuffed and crashed to earth losing 3-0. After this first game Al Ain decided to employ the divide and conquer tactic, using the two courts available. This meant that the cheering support was split. It obviously worked. Pieman was downed easily by the mighty B52 bomber, AKA the Al Ain number 1, 3-0. GC was blown away 3-0 complaining of jet lag. Pops salvaged some pride by getting a point but eventually tail spinning 3-1. The debrief was tough but the venue for it was pleasant. The excellent hosts provided great company. The J squadron limped home after a few hours. The M squadron had cleverly arranged a flight home on another aircraft thus freeing them up to fully enjoy Al Ain! Last seen debating whether to request a holding pattern by the pilot for the journey home to continue to a late night club!! Hayya Flyers bomb Marriot B into submission
